Framed Vintage Silverware

I had so much fun putting this project together!

First, I got to visit three different antique shops to find the vintage cutlery, the frame, fabric, and little mirror.

I covered a thick cardboard with the fabric.

Next, using a hot glue gun. The cutlery were glued into place.

The final touch, an antique little mirror.

This is now hanging in my dining room. : )

Wet-Folding

Wet-folding is a technique introduced to the world by Japanese origami master
Akira Yoshizawa, involving the dampening of thick papers in order to make them more foldable and create sturdier models.
Wet-folding can make the difference between a model that looks like this:

TASCHEN 25 - Special edition!A magnificent pictorial document of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, the Book of Plants is in a class of its own when it comes to the variety and range of flowers engraved. Working under Basilius Besler, a team of at least ten engravers worked on this massive project, translating in situ and specimen drawings faithfully to copper plates.

Nearly four hundred years old, the book has survived though the gardens did not; they were destroyed by invading Swedish troops in 1634. However, in 1998 a reconstruction of the original garden opened to the public in Eichstätt. This facsimile's reproductions - structured by seasons - are taken from a hand-painted edition, one of only a few still extant.

In auction, the asking price for a first edition copy is half a million dollars. You can now enjoy its unique qualities for somewhat less.

About the authors:Prof. Dr. Werner Dressendörfer, pharmaceutical historian and lecturer at the university of Erlangen, is currently conducting research into the history of medicinal plants from a socio-cultural viewpoint. (She reminded me of my children...I really didn't have much say in the matter!)
Me: How will I fit you into a bird cage?
Daisy: I know you will do what is best. (I can tell Daisy really is a very nice flower.)
Me: OK....I'll just go for it, and see what happens!

You may see a rose petal, leaf, or a piece of grass within.
The first layer of the bird cage is from a French hand written letter from the 1800's.

A close up of Catherine's skirt. The first layer is a French hand written letter from the 1800's. The light pink dove, and the light green leaf were both cut from handmade paper from India. An X-Acto knife with #11 blade was used to cut out the bird cage for the skirt. A self-healing cutting board was used under the paper. Iris scissors were used to cut out the French letter, dove, and leaf.

"Kitties New Purse" #13 In Bird Cage Series - Paper cut Scherenschnitt

"Kitties New Purse" is #13 in my Bird Cage Paper Cut Series. Kitty shared with me that she felt that she needed a new fall purse. She wanted something that would go with all of her outfits, and yet be functional (Kitty is just so practical). The Bird Cage purse caught her eye. She just loved the the little song about the kitty and the robin printed on the side.

I think that she looks rather stylish, don't you!?!

(Don't worry, I'll warn Miss Robin before she takes a look inside! : )

"This Life" #12 in Bird Cage Series - Paper Cut Scherenschnitt

Traveling until she finds her love, through this life, and if need be, into the next.

"This Life" is number twelve in my series titled "Bird Cage". The different elements for this papercut were cut from Canson paper using scherenschnitte scissors and X-Acto knife. A new #11 blade is used with a self healing cutting mat underneath the paper. The elements were assembled in layers. A French letter from the 1800s is the first element for the back of the bird cage. The birds were adhered with Elmer's Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive. The remaining bird cage pieces, including the photograph were added using the spray adhesive . "This Life" measures approx. 7 1/2" x 6", and has been mounted on a 10" x 8" 140lb archival off white watercolor paper.

"Dance" is number eleven in my series titled "Bird Cage". The different elements for this papercut were cut from Canson paper using scherenschnitte scissors ans X-Acto knife. A new #11 blade is used with a self healing cutting mat underneath the paper. The elements were assembled in layers. Vintage music is the first element for the back of the bird cage, which was then placed in position, including the ladies legs. The birds were adhered with Elmer's Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive. The remaining bird cage pieces, including the ladies silhouette were added using the spray adhesive . "Dance" measures approx. 6" x 8", and has been mounted on a 10" x 8" 140lb archival off white watercolor paper.

"Dance" has SOLD!

"Let It Snow" #10 in Bird Cage Series Paper Cut Scherenschnitte

"Let It Snow" is number ten in my new series titled "Bird Cage". The different elements for this papercut were cut from Canson paper using scherenschnitte scissors ans X-Acto knife. A new #11 blade is used with a self healing cutting mat underneath the paper. The elements were assembled in layers. The back of the bird cage is placed in position, including the ladies shoes. The tree and deer were adhered with Elmer's Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive. Very small circles were stamped out of white paper with a variable hole punch for the snow, and the same for the red cranberries on the tree. These elements were carefully adhered with paper cement using a toothpick, and placed using tweezers. The remaining bird cage pieces, including the ladies silhouette were added using the spray adhesive . "Let It Snow" measures approx. 8" x 3", and has been mounted on a 10" x 8" 140lb archival off white watercolor paper.

"Bird House" #9 in Bird Cage Series Papercut Scherenschnitte

"Bird House" is the ninth paper cut in my new series titled "Bird Cage". The different elements for this papercut were cut from Canson paper using scherenschnitte scissors ans X-Acto knife. A new #11 blade is used. The elements were assembled in layers. The back of the bird cage is placed in position, included the ladies shoes. The tree and bird were attached with small pieces of foamcore. Very small circles were stamped out of black paper with a variable hole punch for the center of each flower. All elements were carefully adhered with glue and attached with tweezers. Once all the layers are adhered, the remaining bird cage pieces, including the ladies silhouette are added. Final flower petals were added, curling with the fingers while in place. "Bird House" measures approx. 7 " x 2 1/2", and has been mounted on a 8" x 10" 140lb archival off white watercolor paper.

"Dolly" #8 in Bird Cage Series - Paper Cut Scherenschnitte

Celebrate Roanoke!

Yesterday was a beautiful day in Texas...so we headed over to Roanoke to help celebrate their 75th Anniversary!

We found great places to eat....

Watched a gun fight....

My husband had a funnel cake...

This young man was selling popcorn to raise money for his Boy Scout troop...

And, had a glimpse...

...of Roanoke 75 years ago.

Art Retreat Friend: Susan Tidwell

I'm so excited to present my new art retreat friend Susan Tidwell. Susan is a mixed media artist living in Texas. She began rubber stamping several years ago and enjoys altered arts, collage, and anything with paints and inks. The beautiful altered dress pictured above, Susan created for the Altered Dress Form for Breast Cancer Charity Event held at Stamp Salado, a stamp store in Salado, Texas. The auction was held on Sept. 28th. Twenty artists were invited to alter identical wire dress forms for the event and Susan was honored to be asked to participate. This was Susan's entry. Initially, Susan didn't intend to make it pink for breast cancer - it just happened! She used a piece of text from an old book for the bodice, stamping with flourishes, scalloping the top edge and trimming with pink Stickles. On the back Susan added three white eyelets on each side and threaded the white rayon ribbon through, tying in a large bow.The skirt was made with manila office tags. The bottom row has larger tags and the upper two tiers are from smaller ones. Susan painted each tag with gesso and then stamped flourish stamps into the wet gesso. After they dried, she wiped each tag with Tattered Rose Distress Ink and used the Fiskars scallop border punch on the bottom. The tags were all tied with white rayon ribbon to the dress form. Susan also attached flowers punched from text pages with black brads.The challenge of this was attaching the tags into a full skirt without being too stiff or sticking out too much. I think Susan succeeded with this beautiful dress! You may see more of Susan's wonderful creations here.
